How to Choose an Assisted Living Community: What to Look For and Where to Start

Choosing an assisted living community is one of the most important decisions an older adult or family can make. With the right information and a thoughtful approach, it is possible to find a place that feels less like a facility and more like home.

Start With Needs, Not Amenities

Before touring any community, make a honest assessment of current and anticipated needs. Consider daily living support such as bathing, dressing, and medication management, as well as social and recreational preferences. A beautiful dining room means little if the community cannot adequately support the care required.

Know Your Rights as a Consumer

Oregon takes the quality of long-term care seriously. The Oregon Department of Human Services licenses and inspects all facilities that provide long-term care in the state, including assisted living communities. Prospective residents and families can request inspection reports and licensing information directly from ODHS before making any decisions. Reviewing this record is a smart and often overlooked step.

Tour More Than Once

A single visit on a sunny Tuesday morning tells only part of the story. Visit at different times of day, share a meal, and observe how staff interact with residents when they don’t know they’re being watched. Notice whether residents appear engaged and content, and whether the environment feels warm and lived-in.

Ask the Hard Questions

Do not hesitate to ask about staff turnover, how medical emergencies are handled, what happens if care needs increase, and how disputes are resolved. A quality community will welcome these questions.

Trust Your Instincts

Data and inspection reports matter, but so does how a place feels. If something seems off during a visit, pay attention to that feeling.

And One Independent Living Community

The assisted living communities listed above are licensed and inspected by the Oregon Department of Human Services. Another type of senior living facility, called independent living communities, operate under state and local residential landlord-tenant laws. There is one independent living community in Happy Valley. There are also a number of adult care homes in our community; that will be the topic of a future post on The Elder Beat.
